2009 Garage Sale Challenge

The auctions for the first week of this year’s Garage Sale Challenge ended Sunday night with 23 of the 30 qualifying items sold for a sell through rate of 77%.

Three items cracked the $50 barrier. They were the set of 6 Western Horseman Legends books for $50.00; the Starbuck’s Firenze coffee mug for $51.00; and the Civil War set of books by Shelby Foote for $52.00.

Ten of the eleven items from the Library For American Freedoms lot of books I got at the East Grand Forks FOL sale for $5 sold for a total of $215.55 which didn’t hurt my profit for the week. If there was a disappointment for the week it was the set of Wagons West books that only brought $26.27. These often sell for nearly twice that amount.

Here’s how things look at the end of the first week of the Challenge.

Ended eBay Sold Amazon Sold Cost List Fees FV Fees PayPal Fees Incid. Fees Miles Net Profit Total
5/10 $540.04 $85.27 $55.20 $9.20 $62.33 $16.85 $0.00 $23.10 $485.63 $458.63
5/17     $66.75 $13.95       $51.15

Here are my purchases made during the week that are now on eBay.

  • Starbuck’s Seattle coffee mug - paid $.25.
  • A partial set of Holmes & Edwards Romance 1952 silver plate - paid $10. It turns out this isn’t a very popular pattern so we’ll see what happens.
  • Civil War Naval Chronology 1861-1865 book - a $1.00 thrift store purchase
  • 26 Quiltmaker magazines from the 1990s - paid $1.00
  • Where’s Waldo? Being A Pirate jigsaw puzzle - paid $.25 (it was a slow day at the garage sales & I had to buy something)
  • Red River Centennial Wagon Train book - paid $.50
  • Wyndmere Centennial History book - paid $.50
  • Wyndmere History In Review book - paid $.25
  • The Centennial Anthology Of North Dakota - paid $.25
  • Lucky Montana Cowpoke book - paid $.50
  • Minnesota Quilts book - paid $.50
  • 7 Captain Underpants books - paid $1.00
  • Treasure Hunter’s Manual #6 - paid $1.00

  • 13 books from the Time Life American Country series - paid $3.25
  • 24 Berenstain Bears books - paid $3.50

I also purchased four books that went on Amazon for a total of $2.75.

  • Arabian Horse Breeding
  • Graphic Design Basics
  • The Organic Cooks Bible
  • Equine Science

How well these items do will likely depend to a large degree on how well the Meiwa Christmas dinnerware does.
