Yesterday I talked about how having a mission statement for your eBay business would increase your chances of succeeding. If you took the time to actually complete the “homework” assignment you may have found that, at first glance, what you came up with seems totally unreachable right now.
Today, we are going to begin breaking our mission statement down into smaller, more measurable, objectives and by the time we’re done hopefully you can begin to see that it is attainable.
These smaller objective are really nothing more than goals we can set for ourselves. I’ve written about Goals & Goal Setting before, but today I’m going to talk about coming up with goals specific to your mission statement.
First we need to understand that a mission statement and goals are not the same thing. Simply put, your mission statement is the “why”. Goals are the “how”.
If your eBay mission statement is to have the money to help your children make the down payment on their first home, more than likely there will be multiple goals that you must reach to bring that to fruition. For example, some of your goals might be to open a special savings account for that purpose; to put $xxx into that account each month; to learn about other investment vehicles that provide a higher rate of return than a savings account; once you have $xxxx accumulated in the saving account to move a percentage of it into other investments; etc.
Depending upon what your mission statement is you may end up wiith just a small handful of eBay goals or you may end up with bushel basket of them. The number you end up with isn’t as important as the fact that you have broken your mission statement down into bite-sized goals that you can cross off as they are completed one at a time.
If your mission statement seemed overwhelming, take the time to break it down into several smaller bite-sized goals that seem more attainable. That’s the homework assignment for today.
Tomorrow we will talk about chopping your goals into even smaller bites that can help get you on the road to eBay success in a short time.
