Day 5 - What To Sell On eBay And Where To Find It - Part II

Posted on 25 February 2006 by Gary H

Selling your own product or products on eBay can be very profitable. But to succeed you must have the right kind of product and you need to do it properly. In this part of What To Sell On eBay And Where To Find It we are going to look at some important does and don’ts if you choose to explore this option in your eBay business.

These products can be broken down into two basic types - tangible and non-tangible (or downloadable ) and we will look at each of these separately, starting with non-tangible.

Most non-tangible, or downloadable, products found on eBay fall into into one of four categories - ebooks, software and music or image files. All of these have one major common disadvantage for you as a seller. They are simply too easy to reproduce.

If you sell downloadable ebooks, image files, or music files on eBay it’s only a matter of time before several enterprising lazy no-goods will have purchased your product, stolen your sales copy, and started selling your product for $1 or $2 on eBay. Once that happens, and I promise you it will, your product will be totally devalued and you’re sales will be zero unless you’re willing to sell it for $1 or $2 also, which is not the way to build a sustainable eBay business.

For that reason alone, it makes absolutely no sense to spend the time developing your own downloadable product.

The same holds true for selling any of the numerous ebooks that are sold with resale rights, private label rights, master resale rights, etc. They may sound attractive because they provide an instant product to see, but you have to realize they are going to sound just as attractive to hundreds or thousands of other. The problems are pretty much the same - way too many seller’s selling $1 or $2 products that can often be found elsewhere on the Net for free. This isn’t a viable business model.

Downloadable software suffers from the same problem but to a much lesser degree. Because of that it may appear attractive to some, but it has it’s own set of headaches, not the least of which is support. Sell software and you can very easily find yourself buried so deep in support issues you won’t see daylight.

This leaves us with tangible products that you produce yourself. You will find thousands of this type of product on eBay covering the entire spectrum from home-made candles to how-to DVDs on a variety of subjects.

Building an eBay business around this type of tangible product can be extremely profitable and tomorrow we will look at what some types of these that do well, how to come up with a product idea, and some special considerations you need to keep in mind when pursuing this business model on eBay.
