Over the years I’ve subscribed to a lot of eBay related newsletters. So, like tens, or hundreds, of thousands of others, two days ago my email box was flooded with emails telling me about the release of a new eBay product.
Then yesterday, it was filled with nearly as many “Sorry if you couldn’t get the new product. The response was so overwhelming the servers crashed….” emails.
Of course the servers crashed - The ‘Herd’ was stampeding once again.
Over the last few years, through hundreds of forum threads, email exchanges, phone calls, and face to face conversations with people trying to establish profitable businesses on eBay, I’ve come on the conclusion that a large majority of those people suffer from the ‘herd mentality’.
What’s the ‘herd mentality?”
The ‘Herd Mentality’ never stops looking for the easy way
The herd isn’t interested in getting their hands dirty. That’s why all the drop-shipping lists, wholesale lists, resale right packages, and such are so popular. The people who sell them cater to the herd’s “do nothing-get rich” addiction.
The truth is - No one ever became successful on eBay without doing the work themselves and getting their hands dirty.
The ‘Herd Mentality’ always plays follow-the-leader
The herd isn’t interested in doing research, being innovative, or taking a risk. That’s why so many wannabe eBayers ask about selling big screen TVs, digital cameras, laptop computers, high-end electronic equipment, etc. They see thousands of other people selling these things on eBay so it must be the route to success.
The truth is - Most of these sellers aren’t making enough a month to live above the poverty level. And the few that do aren’t about to share how they’ve managed to do it.
The ‘Herd Mentality’ chases the dream
The herd is convinced that somewhere out there waits the product or service that will provide them with instant eBay riches without doing any work. They spend their lives trying to open the right door. When they don’t immediately find the prize behind door No. 1, they wait, with their credit card in hand, for door No. 2 to appear - ad naseum.
The truth is - The dream exists only in their mind. Nowhere else.
The ‘Herd Mentality’ believes that price equals value
The herd has been trained to equate value with price. The higher the price, the more likely it will contain the secret to the dream. A member of the herd will guffaw this, but you can be sure the internet marketers selling to the herd are convinced of it.
The truth is - While there are a few very good higher priced eBay products, many of the really good ones are among the lowest priced.
The ‘Herd Mentality’ is in love with big numbers
The herd has no interest in learning how to make $500, $1000, or $2000 a month on eBlay. To them that’s not even worth considering. They’re too busy chasing promises of six or seven figures a year.
The truth is - No member of the herd will ever come close to six figures a year and most won’t even reach the four figure a month level. The first requires work and they don’t consider the latter worth their time.

Hey Gary,
Kudos on this post, I was also bombarded with these same emails! First they tell you “Go Get It…NOW” then you’re told, “the server crashed yesterday…Go Get It, NOW!”
Most of the newsletters I’m getting are turning into nothing more than a buch of affiliate links for the same products, by the same people!!
As an eBay trained Education Specialist, I do trainings and personal consultations as a part of my eBay business and I see the herd mentality you speak of all the time.
People go from “eBay guru” to “eBay guru” looking for some secret formula to overnight success on eBay, and when I inform them there isn’t one, most think I’m crazy!!
I tell my clients, success on eBay is very simple, but its not easy, much like farming…before any “crops” ($$$) can be harvested lots of work must be done first!!
But very few want to do the work, how sad!!
