Have you ever heard the term “Northern Soul“?
If you have, you’re a step or two ahead of me, because I’d never heard the term until less than twenty-four hours ago when an I ran into an acquaintance who sells part-time on eBay. She asked me the same question - “have you ever heard the term Northern Soul?” When I replied no I hadn’t, she just got a smile on her face and said I should check it out when I got the chance.
It turns out that Northern Soul is a genre of the 60’s & 70’s music business that currently has a huge world-wide following, but particularly in the United Kingdom where it all began.
Last night a search for Northern Soul on Google returned plenty of interesting tid-bits including this rather loose definition of the term from Wikipedia.
A search for the term Northern Soul on eBay found 8983 closed auctions with some pretty impressive prices for some. Of course, like any area of collectibles there are also some things within the niche that don’t do very well.
Initially, Northern Soul certainly doesn’t look like a sub-niche you’ll find things in every day of the week, but to me it merits enough further research to become at least semi-knowledgeable in.
I would think there has to be some examples of Northern Soul floating around most areas of the country. It’s just a matter of motivating yourself to gain enough knowledge so that you can buy it when it presents itself.
The young woman who asked me if I’d ever heard about it recently bought about twenty white-label promo 45s at a thrift shop in Grand Forks for $.10 each. It turned out that six of them fell into the Northern Soul genre and those six sold on ebay for a little over $3000.
If that isn’t motivation enough, then you should probably invest $50 or so in a two year old list of eBay drop-shippers and leave Northern Soul to the rest of us.
