Saturday Morning’s Garage Sale Finds

Posted on 27 August 2005 by Gary H

Todays garage sale finds were the best of the week and may turn out to be the best of the summer. Here’s what I was able to buy:

A Hopalong Cassidy pocket knife in good condition. I paid $3 for it and hope to get between $15 to $20 for it.

Four different issues of Wilton’s Cake Decorating Annual. I paid $2 for the four of them and they should sell for at least $15.

A small booklet of fur trapping tips published by Sears Roebuck in 1943. I paid $.50 for it. It should bring somewhere between $15 and $25 on eBay.

A large wholesale merchandise catalog from 1961. This was another $.50 item from the same garage sale as the trapping booklet came from. This is a long ways from being a desirable catalog, but I have a real soft spot in my heart for catalogs, so what can I say. It should bring between $10 and $20 on eBay.

A never played with board game from 1975 called “After The Holocaust.” This is similar to the war/strategy games that were popular in the late 1960s and the 1970s. I paid $.10 for it and it should bring at least $10 to $15, maybe more.

An old three piece set of French pink enamelware cannisters. I paid $10 for them and, while each of them has some chipping, they still should provide a profit. I’m not really sure what they may bring, but if I get $40 to $50 I’ll be happy.

I also bought an eight inch high pottery cat which will either turn out to be the find of the summer or a total dud. The couple at the garage sale where I bought it were convinced it was a piece of University of North Dakota School of Mines pottery and wouldn’t budge off their price of $250.

I wasn’t sure what it was, but I was 100% convinced it wasn’t a piece of UND. Based on the clay it’s made of and the color and type of glaze, I kept thinking Rosemeade Pottery, but it’s not like any piece of Rosemeade I’ve ever seen.

My gut kept telling me two things - “Lunch hour piece” and “Buy it you fool.” In the end my gut won out and it’s currently sitting on a shelf under the TV in the living room.

It will require some research, but if I can verify it came out of Rosemeade Pottery it should be a $10,000 to $20,000 piece. If I can’t, at least the hours spent on the research will keep me out of trouble.

After I’d been shopping for about 2 hours this morning my cell phone rang. It was a friend calling to say I needed to get over to (insert address here) because they had a garage full of books.

Well, it wasn’t exactly a garage full of books, but there were two walls full. All adult non fiction on various subjects published within the last 25 to 30 years. I spent the next ninety minutes there going through the books, punching ISBN numbers into Scout Pal on my cell phone. In the end I bought a little over 100 books for $1 each.

Their subjects cover interior decorating, home construction and remodeling, world war I and II, and various breeds of dogs. I’ll be listing all of them on Amazon and they should bring well over $3000 over a period of time.

After purchasing the books I had to cut my shopping short because I had a date to take two of my granddaughters shopping for a birthday present for their father.

Overall, a profitable and enjoyable day.
