Garage Sale Tip - Animorphs

Posted on 25 May 2006 by Gary H

Have you ever thought what it would like to be able to turn into your favorite animal? You probably haven’t, but the chances are good that your children, grandchildren, nieces, or nephews have, and that leads to a garage sale tip - Animorphs books.

If you don’t already know, Animorphs is a series of science fiction books for children written by K.A. Applegate and published by Scholastic. The ongoing series, which now includes more than 50 books, has attracted a huge number of young readers along with a fair number of older collectors.

Because many of the children who read them become avid fans, you can often find complete, or near complete, series at garage sales for anywhere from $5 to $20.

While individual titles and small groupings normally do not do well on eBay, complete sets regularly sell for between $75 and $125 when offered.

The series currently consists of 54 numbered books plus an additional 10 to 12 related books. Scholastic’s website offers a down-loadable printable list of all the titles in PDF format.

How to buy them

I recommend that you buy them in large lots. Obviously, you would like to buy the complete series, but don’t pass up the opportunity to buy a group of 35 to 45 when you can.

If you buy an incomplete set, make a list of the ones that are missing and look for those specific issues singly at sales.

What to pay for them

Always keep your per-book cost below $.5o @ and preferably $.25 @ or less. When you have a chance to buy a large lot of them always make an offer under what the seller is asking because they will often jump at the chance to get rid of all of them at once.

If you completing a partial set, you may want to pay a little more per book for the last ones you need, but always keep in mind what your total cost of the completed set.

On occasion you will also find Animorphs videos, board games, and other related items. Buy these if you can get them for a reasonable price and include them as part of the set of books when you sell them. They will add value to the set and increase your final price.

Yeah, you’re so right Gary, these Animorphs sell like hot cakes in lots of 20 or more actually!!

Last spring we sold a lot of 36 for $60+ and another lot of 25 for $45 and change!! The best part is we’ve yet to pay over $0.10 cents!!

The lot of 25 we paid $0.05 cents apiece for them late in the final day of a weekend sale I had attended on Firday when they were $0.50 cents each and the folks said no when I made the same 5 cent offer.

Here’s a tip: Always start your offer to buy large lots at $0.05 cents each, you’ll be surprised how often your offer will be accepted!

    These books are EVERYWHERE!!
