Strange Book Sale Pricing Strategies

Posted on 20 October 2006 by Gary H

Is this just happening in North Dakota, or are book sale organizers becoming weird in other parts of the country?

Yesterday at the Bismarck FOL sale I bought books by the pound.

This morning, at the Grand Forks AAUW sale prices were determined by age, cover type, and thickness. I didn’t bring a copy of their price sheet home with me, but it looked something like this…..

Hardcover books:

  • Copyright 1994 or before - $1.50
  • Copyright 1995 to 1999 - $2.00
  • Copyright 2000 to 2002 - $3.00
  • Copyright 2003 to 2004 - $5.00
  • Copyright 2005 to 2006 - $7.00

Softcover books:

  • Small paperback with 199 pages or less - $1.00
  • Small paperback with 200 pages or more - add an additional $.50
  • Large paperback with 199 pages or less - $2.00
  • Large paperback with 200 pages or more - add an additional $1.00

If you’re buying books to resell you’d better really know what you’re buying or you will go broke real fast with prices like that. I ended up spending $46.50 there after spending more than two hours running book after book through Scoutpal.

From the AAUW sale I drove two blocks to the Grand Forks Public Library were the FOL was holding a small book sale that consisted entirely of softcover books. Their pricing structure was much simpler…..

Five books for one can of canned goods

My purchases their amounted to 23 books. Since they seemed to have some difficulty making change, I paid for my books and tipped them approximately 6 ounces of French cut green beans.

What ever happened to the good old days of one price for soft-covers and one for hardcovers?
