For more than twenty years Gene Hill worked as a magazine editor. First for Sports Afield magazine and later for Field & Stream magazine. While with Field & Stream, Gene Hill wrote a regular column called “Tail Feathers”. He wrote about hunting, fishing, hunting dogs, and his hunting partners with a style that, at various times, made readers laugh, cry, and remember the way things were.
After his death in 1977, some of his columns were reprinted in book form. Many of these books are still very popular with sportsmen today.
Some of the most popular titles include:
- A Gallery Of Waterfowl And Upland Birds
- Passing A Good Time
- Tears And Laughter
- Shotgunner’s Notebook
- Hill Country
- A Hunter’s Fireside Book
- Mostly Tailfeathers
- A Listening Walk
- Sunlight And Shadows
- The Whispering Wings Of Autumn
Over the years his books have been published by several publishers, some of whom released specially bound, numbered, limited editions. Some of these publishers are:
- Winchester Press - One of the first publisher to Mr. Hill’s books for the general public. Some of the Winchester titles were published prior to Hill’s death. Although most of Hill’s books will sell, the later Winchester editions tend to bring the lowest prices of all the publishers.
- Countryside Press - Most of their books were published in the mid to late 1990s and will normally bring $20 or more on eBay.
- Amwell Press - During the 1990s Amwell published Leather bound limited editions (1000 copies) of most or all of Hills books. These are tough to find but will always sell well on eBay.
- Peterson Publishing - Another publisher who printed most of Hill’s books in 1000 copy limited editions. Like the Amwell Press books, they are tough to find, but will always do well on eBay. Peterson also published trade editions of each book also.
- E.P. Dutton - Another publisher of limited edition Hill books.
Gene Hill’s books can be found at garage sales and thrift stores if you watch for them. Most of the one’s you fine will be Countryside or Winchester editions, but they are always worth picking up for $3 to $5 or less.
Amwell Press also published a book titled “Beyond Hill Country: Gene Hill Remembered” which is a compilation of thirty-two stories written in remembrance of Gene Hill by his friends, colleagues, and admirers. This is worth grabbing if you find it also.
