The Hamm’s Beer Ashtray Soars On eBay

Posted on 06 September 2005 by Gary H

Last week’s eBay auctions ended last night and the Hamm’s Beer ashtray was the high point of the auction. It attracted eleven bids and sold for $357.25.

Other high spots from last week’s eBay auctions included the pink graniteware cannister set which sold for $112.45; the Time-Life American Country series selling for $109.50; the Warren Harding real estate course which brought $80 (I questioned whether it would even get a bid); and the Hopolong Cassidy pocket knife that sold for $62.00 which was twice as much as I thought it would bring.

The Dodge Viper GTS dealer package sold for a disappointing $36.68. I had really thought it would at least nudge the $100 mark if it didn’t go over it.

There were other items that sold for fifty to seventy percent of what I’d thought they would bring, but they were pretty evenly matched by items bringing considerably more than I’d hoped for also.

It just goes to show that you can never completely understand eBay. Several items which had been re-listed after previously not attracting a $9.99 starting bid, found multiple bidders and sold in the $15 to $25 range.

In total 38 of the 53 items I had listed sold for a sell through rate of 72% and total sales of $1269.71. Total cost of the items sold was $73.20 and the total cost of all items listed was $84.25.

Whichever figure you use, after eBay and PayPal fees profits for these garages sale and thrift store items were well over 1000%.

Wow! What a great deal, Gary. It’s something how you find these great items to sell.

Congrats — I’ll take 1000% ROI any old day.

I’m still working at it and learning more every day.
