What To Sell On eBay - Thinking Outside The Box - Part II

what to sell on ebay

Today we are going to look at one seller who looks as though he spent some time thinking outside the box when deciding what to sell on eBay. His eBay ID is hershey-on-line and while he sells a couple other items, his main inventory is consists of two things - a one hour DVD taken in a Pennsylvania junkyard and another one hour DVD taken in a different junkyard.

This seller is obviously an outside the box thinker when deciding what to sell on eBay. Let’s take a closer look at how he’s doing with these two DVDs.

Looking closer we find that:

  • He’s a PowerSeller so he has to be averaging $1000 in sales a month
  • Although he’s currently having a small sale, if we look at his eBay store we find his normal selling price is $29.95 per disc or both discs for $53.95
  • A look at his feedback shows his customers enjoy the DVDs so he’s probably generating some word-of-mouth advertising and they will buy again if he adds similar DVDs to his inventory
  • He received 75 feedback in the month of December. Assuming that 75% of his customers left feedback, he had roughly 100 sales for the month

Although we aren’t working with exact figures, one-hundred sales at $29.95 each is $2995.00 gross sales for the month. What are his expenses?

While there are some initial equipment expenses, once you have the equipment, the cost of producing each DVD is quite small. My guess would be that his profit per DVD is $20+ after reproduction expenses, eBay fees, and PayPal fees. That’s a profit of $2000 or more each month.

If you’ve been reading The Auction Rebel for very long, you know I believe selling used physical items is the best eBay business model for most people. However, I realize that business model isn’t for everyone.

If that’s you, then thinking outside the box and coming up with a product similar to what hershey-on-line has done offers you a much better chance of succeeding than the drop shipping/wholesale list approach ever will.

This is just one example of thinking outside the box when deciding what to sell on eBay.
