The $10,000 Garage Sale eBay Challenge - Week 9

Posted on 05 July 2007 by Gary H

$10,000 garage sale challenge

This update for The $10,000 Garage Sale eBay Challenge is a day later than usual because I decided to spend the 4th of July pretty much a “nothing to do with eBay” mode. I surrounded myself with family and we went to a vintage car show, took the grandchildren to a kids street fair, watched the parade, took in a free concert by several local bands, and ended the evening by watching the fireworks display.

No stress and very enjoyable. I hope enjoyed the Holiday as much as we did.

The auctions for the eighth week of The $10,000 Garage Sale eBay Challenge ended last Sunday evening. There were twenty-nine Challenge items listed and twenty-three of them sold for a total of $684.67. The sell-through rate was 79%.

Here is how things look after the eighth week of the Challenge.

Last week’s local garage sales didn’t provide anything really spectacular, but I did purchase well over forty items for The Challenge. Add in a couple of re-lists and there are currently fifty-one Challenge items listed this week. They are shown below along with what I paid for each of them. There are no links to individual items this week. With more than fifty items listed, it is too time consuming to individually link to each sale. You can check my current auction page if you want to look at individual items.

    Hey Gary,

Do you “haggle” much or du you pretty much pay what an item is priced at??

You got GREAT deals on the Beer bottle salt & pepper sets, as well as the Northern Soul 45 rpm records!! .10 cents each for Promo copies…WOW!!

    What a score!!

    Stephen,

No haggling on either of these.

The beer bottles were priced at $2.00 for a set, and $1.00 each for several singles they had. There were quite a few more lets that I passed on because either part of the labels were missing or the caps were completely rusty.

The 45s came from a garage sale held by a woman who was recently divorced from someone who worked at one of the local radios stations some years ago. They weren’t priced, and when I asked how much she wanted for them, she said “ten cents each.” I bought 36 and left another twenty or so that were very badly scratched.

    Hi Mr Gary,
I say this everytime I write but I love your site and appreciate you sharing your knowledge with us!
My question is do you sell on ebay under more than one username or have you always sold under the paperpeasures46? Just curious. thanks and have a great weekend.

    Ruth,

I have several other eBay IDs that I sell under. One for art pottery, one for advertising related items, one for antique/collectible toys, and another for ephemera.

I don’t mention or provide them here because my goal with the blog is to help others get started on eBay in an area they can reasonably expect to be profitable for them. With all the reproductions, repaired items, repaints, etc., it’s too easy for someone to get burned in those areas, particularly art pottery and toys.

The paperpleasures46 ID is one I began using about a few years ago when I wanted a user ID I could provide to readers of a membership site that no longer exists so they could see my auctions for things I was talking about in the site.

Something else for everyone to look for at garage sales … Beswick Animal Figurines

An example …. a few weeks ago I picked up a Beswick calf at a garage sale for $.50 (which I thought was a Beswick figurine, but was unmarked). I figured it was worth the $.50 gamble. I went home, confirmed what is was, listed it and it sure was worth it! ($100+, item #230142729881). The Buyer has received it and loved it! A few weeks before I had picked up a number of ‘name brand’ things from the estate of a long time collector, so just used the same listing format.

Beswick is just one example, but once you’ve seen a few Beswicks, these figures are quite distinctive (note the markings on the bottom of the hoof and the placement of the hole on the bottom) and have a high quality glaze. They almost shout out the name even if not marked. I purchased a Beswick Animals price guide at an auction for cheap a while ago and it’s super for positively identifying the figures, years and approximate value.

You will not likely run into lots of these at garage sales, but it is worth being able to recognize them and pick up when you see them. There is always a steady market on ebay for these collectibles and the sell through rate is always good.

    Thanks for the great tip.
