What Kind Of Books Sell On Amazon?

Posted on 09 October 2007 by Gary H

Over the last couple months, most mentions of Amazon here elicit two or three emails from readers asking what kind of books sell well on there.

I’m certainly a long ways from being an expert on that subject but, over time, I’ve been able to develop an ‘eye’ in some genres of what has a fair chance of doing well on Amazon. However. whenever I try to answer those questions, once I get beyond ‘non-fiction’, I have a hard time generalizing what kind of books I look for. After I hit the ’send email’ button I’m always left with the feeling that I haven’t really been a whole lot of help.

Yesterday evening was the cut-off time for my last two weeks of Amazon sales. I thought I’d list the titles of what I sold on Amazon during the previous two week period in the hope that seeing some actual titles would help interested readers get a better idea of what, for me, generally does well. I’m just cutting and pasting these out of my Amazon stats page, so in some cases, if the book has a long title, the last word or two may be cut off.

So, here goes.

    Gary,
What was the average selling price??

  2. Stephen A. Says:

    Gary,

One other thing before I logoff, my big question is How do you detemine which venue (ebay/amazon) a particular book is better suited for?

I’ve never been clear on that.

  3. Gary H Says:

    Stephen,

Rather than go back and gather up the exact price each book sold for, I’m just going to estimate an average.

There were 54 books sold and Amazon will be depositing $1352.71 into my checking account. That works out to a few cents for than $25 a book after Amazon has deducted their commission and made adjustments for the way they charge, and compensate, for postage.

With that I’m guessing the actual average sale price would be $27 or $28 per book.

That figure isn’t all profit, because by the time they send me the money, I’ve already spent roughly $2.50 to $3.00 to ship each book sold and my initial cost of the books must come out of that also - probably on average $1 a book.

As for how I decide which venue I put a book on,I thought I’d already posted something about how I do this, but looking through the archives, I don’t find it. (Must be old age setting in, I guess.) I’ve put it on my to-do list and will get something up about sometime during the next week.

    Gary

    OK!!

I thought you had as well, however I couldn’t find anything archived either.

    Thanks for the insights!!

  5. Stephen A. Says:

…also, do you price your books above or below the average Amazon selling price for that item?

  6. Gary H Says:

    Stephen,

Where is set the price is dependent upon Amazon’s popularity rating for each particular book and it’s condition.

If there isn’t a lot of interest in the book (popularity rating of a million or more) I will always price it so my copy is the cheapest available, irregardless of condition.

If it’s quite popular (rating below 50,000) I try to price it so my copy is within the cheapest 5 to 10 in it’s condition.

In between, and I try to aim for being somewhere in the cheapest half dozen in the condition the book is in.

    Gary
