A Disappointing AAUW Book Sale

Posted on 21 October 2005 by Gary H

The AAUW book sale this morning was a huge disappointment. As long as I’ve been attending these sales their pricing structure for books has always been $1 for hardcovers, $.50 for paperbacks and $.25 for children’s books.

This year they totally changed their pricing and today it was:

  • Hardcover copyrighted prior to 1984 - $1.50
  • Hardcover copyrighted 1985-1990 - $2.00
  • Hardcover copyrighted 1991-1995 - $3.00
  • Hardcover copyrighted 1996-2002 - $5.00
  • Hardcover copyrighted 2003-2005 - $7.00
  • Large soft cover (whatever that is) - $2.00
  • Small soft cover - $3.00
  • Children’s books - $.50

Their new pricing structure really limits the number of books someone can buy for resale and there were quite a few people there with smoke coming out of their ears.

My book purchases amounted to seven new college textbooks still sealed in their shrink wrap. How they ended up there I have no idea, but I was happy to pay $7 each for them. They’ve already been listed on Amazon where they should sell pretty quickly at a profit of $60 to $80 each.

The only other books I bought were a collectors guide about figural napkins holders, a political history of North Dakota, and one about Montana. All three were copyrighted prior to 1984 so they were only $1.50 each. These three will go on eBay next week.

I also purchased a five year run of Interview magazine for $.10 each. I’ve never had much luck with these on eBay, but they sell fairly well for $10 to $15 each, depending on who’s on the cover, in my TIAS store.

Overall, the sale was a disappointment and, based on all the grief people were giving the ladies at the checkout tables, it will be interesting to see if things are priced the same way next year.

There were three garage sales that started today and at one of them I purchased a letter holder/pen set holder made by Haeger specially for the Parker Pen Company for $2.00. Haeger is beginning to develop a collector base and there are a lot of pen collectors out there, so I’m hoping that the cross collectible factor will bring a few bids and it will get into the $25 to $35 range.
