There ended up being a total of five garage sales that opened in Grand Forks today.
My first stop was a church sponsored sale where I paid $2 for the opportunity to get in at 8:00 am, an hour before the general public was admitted. My purchases there amounted to a 3 DVD set titled Legendary Lighthouses for $1 and the A & E mini-series Pride & Prejudice on VHS for $2.50. Legendary Lighthouses was listed on Amazon for $26.99 and Pride & Prejudice will go on eBay.
My second stop was a sale that had advertised ‘lots of books’. They weren’t lying, but they were nearly all old romance paperbacks with water damage. My guess is they were in someone’s basement eleven years ago when Grand Forks was almost entirely underwater. I did buy about a half dozen Great Northern Railway Historical Society fact sheets and calendars at this sale for a dollar. These will go on eBay starting Sunday evening.
The next sale had been advertised as an estate garage sale with plenty of antiques. There was a lot of nice things there, but most of it was priced higher than I was willing to pay. My purchases there were three children’s books for $1 each and a book from 1928 titled ‘Historical Roadsides In New Jersey’. All four books will go on eBay beginning Sunday.
There was also several nice pieces of Wedgewood Jasperware that appeared at first glance to be reasonably priced, but close inspection showed that every piece had one or two very small chips. Before I left though, a woman had grabbed them all and was telling her husband what a great buy they were.
The fourth sale was a total waste of time. I was there when they opened and all they had for sale was a used 19″ TV, two sets of cross country skis with poles, about a dozen old textbooks, a few knick-knacky things to hang on walls. a space heater, and 4 old worn tires.
The last sale of the day wasn’t a whole lot different from the previous one, except there were a few more items for sale. I did buy one book there. A limited edition ‘Colonel Hawker’s Shooting Diaries’ from Darrydale Press for $2, which will join most of the day’s other purchases on eBay.
How about you? Did you go garage saling this weekend, and if so what did you find?

So I drove 50 miles to attend 4 garage sales that were advertised I could find, the 5th i couldn’t find or they decided not to have the sale after all. Why would somebody advertise a sale and then not hold it…hope it wasn’t anything serious!!
ANYWAY… after driving over there all I found was a few items.
– (5) Dr. Seuss beginning reader books for $0.05 cents each. I’ll hold onto them until I get a group of 50 or more.
– Vintage Chrome Beehive blender with glass blender jar & top for $2 made by Waring (ca. 1940s-’50s). I’ll change the plug for $1 and it should sell on eBay for $35-$50 bucks.
Since I didn’t find any thing on Saturday, I decided to attend a local auction held by a small mom & pop couple who are just a hoot! I’ve often found treasures there and yesterday was no exception!!
There I won the following items… (pics are from their website)
– 12″ Fulper “VaseKraft” Vase (ca. 1909-1929) for $75; the last one I had sold to a private collector for $500. ==> <a href=”">PIC
– Cobalt blue Mary Gregory Glass Vase for $17.50 ==> <a href=”">PIC I didn’t feel a very tiny flake chip on the rim when I previewed it, and it very well could have happened after I had inspected it. Oh well I hope I can get $50-$75 for it regardless .
– (10) Life Magazines (1941, ‘42, ‘43, & ‘46) for $5.00. I’ve sold WWII era Life mags in the past anywhere from $15.00 - $50.00 each, so we’ll see what happens.
– Box Lot of Porcelain for $35.00. Contents included (4) hand painted Nippon cup & saucers; (4) beautiful Hand Painted Lorenz Hutschenreuther ca.1857-1917 9″ plates; (5 pcs.) Wedding Band porcelain tea set (Pot w/ lid, sugar bowl w/lid & creamer) with impressed CFH marks; (12 pcs.) Dinner China marked Leonard Vienna Austria includes, (2) serving platters, (1) covered serving dish, and (9) 10″ dinner plates.
The whole box for $35 bucks and not a chip or crack on a single piece!
– (3) Vintage 1940s-’50s Printed tablecloths for $2.50. very shabby chic!! I’ll list them for $9.99 each and they’ll sell.
Overall, I was pleased with my “treasures” from this weekend!
Good Luck Everybody!!

I forgot about the Goodwill Industries thrift store I visited on Saturday after my very meager garage sale finds, and to my surprise, I found some overlooked treasures!
Now I need to say that this Goodwill store runs their own eBay auctions so finding anything never happens, but I keep going and from time to time I something slips through the cracks
This week I found…
– (1) WWII era US Navy 10″ Officer’s Mess Dinner Plate for $0.50 cents. I’ll list it for $14.95 and it should sell for that or a bit more!
– (1) Jackson China Wild Ducks Red Airbrushed 10″ dinner plate for $0.50 cents. I will list this and it should appeal to the wild duck and duck hunt collectors. This was a “gut purchase” so we’ll see what happens
– (1) Betty Crocker’s Cookbook (5 ring binder) for $1.00. Shows some wear from use and the title page & table of contents is missing but it otherwise looked complete. Plus I was irritated that I’d not found anything after driving 50 miles and I wasn’t going home empty handed!!
This bag got into my sons rooms which is why I forgot about it! Anybody with a 12-year-old boy knows how lucky I am that I was able to find it at all!!
LOL!!
Good Luck Everybody!!

Tiffany and Stephen,
Well, it’s pretty obvious you both had a more fruitful Saturday than I did. Congratulations!
Can I come and visit?
