The photo to the left is what I saw out my windshield as I was waiting for one of today’s garage sales to open.
I woke this morning to eleven new garage sales in the paper and to between 1.5″ and 2″ of new snow on the ground. To make it more enjoyable, the snow had a lot of moisture in it, making the residential streets in town slipperier than they had been all winter.
One of the sales was postponed until next Saturday, but everyone else just toughed it out, put on their winter coats, shoveled their driveways, and opened up on schedule.
The pickings were kind of slim. My purchased amounted to:
- 35 Harlequin romances from their Blaze series for $3.50 that I hope will bring between $25 and $35
- A book titled “The Knitter’s Guide To Sweater Design for $1.00. There aren’t a lot of these around and, although it’s not in very good condition, I’m hoping it will still bring at least $25 to $30
- A 12 CD audio book of Kevin Trudeau’s “Natural Cures They Don’t Want You To Know About” for $3. I didn’t run this through ScoutPal and I should have. I’ll may well end up throwing it in a garage sale at the end of the summer
- For books by Andrew Bill from his Enchantica series for $2.00. These don’t look that great on ScoutPal, but I thought there must be a few people who would buy four of them in a lot. We’ll see.
- A Tauntom Press book titled “Chainsaw Lumbermaking” for $.50. I just liked the title. Somebody out there must want to build a house in the woods made entirely from lumber they cut with their own chainsaw
- Starrcade ‘86 for $1.00. Hopefully a few wresting fanatics will want this so I can make a few bucks on it
Only the die-hard garage salers were out this morning because weather like this tends to keep the riff-raff at home, but it needs to warm up pretty quick because I’m going to Canada to go fishing in six weeks. Fishing is a lot more enjoyable when you can wear a t-shirt rather than five layers of sweatshirts and windproof pants and jackets.

Gary,
It was 60 and sunny this morning when I set off for the 4 sales listed in my area.
My purchases consisted of…
– “Ultimate Rottweiler” a HC W/DJ book in what looks like never read condition for $0.25 cents
– 86 Beanie Babies box lot for $20.00 ($0.22 cents each), All have their tags and many are still in their original bags/boxes.
– (4) Hand Painted Lorenz Hutschenreuther Selb Bavaria plates for $0.50 cents each
– Sango China “Blossom” Pattern Complete Service for twelve (12) for $10.00. Each place setting includes…
* Dinner Plate
* Salad/Bread Plate
* Cup & Saucer
* Wide Rim Soup Bowl
– A box lot of assorted paper ephemera for $2.00.
What caught my eye were two pieces of early US commercial airline WWII pilot recruiting materials. One from Pan American Airways Systems and one from United Air Lines.
The United Air Lines piece is a full packet including original envelop, recruiting letter, application and company manual with wonderful period images.
– (5) Dr. Seuss Beginning Reader books for $0.10 cents each. I’ll collect these all summer and sell them in groups of 40-50 next September and during the holiday buying season.

Wow, Gary, it was 90 degrees here yesterday! We’re having unusually hot weather in San Diego. I only went to two thrift stores and browsed my local antique store instead of garage sales yesterday (waiting for the challenge to get myself in full-gear shopping).
Found a First Edition Illustrated Disney Song Book which should bring at least $24.99. Bought for $2.50.
Took a chance on a vintage-looking model horse for $3.00, but when I got him home, found out one ear is broken, and only certain horses bring any money.
Bought 17 Fisher Price Peek-a-book blocks for $5, which I may or may not be able to make a profit on.

Diane,
Where in San Diego R U ??
I lived in Pacific Beach (PB to the locals) on Cass St. and worked at the Hard Rock Cafe in La Jolla!!
My aunt was the treasurer for San Diego back in the 1970s as well.
Being stuck here in Upstate NY makes me long for the sunny shores of California, although I travel home often, I really miss Cali during the winter when the temps here drop below zero and the snow fall is measured in FEET, instead of inches!! BURRRRRRRR!!
Good luck in the challenge!
Good Luck Everybody!!

Hi, Stephen,
I live in Mt. Helix now, very sunny East County, but used to live in PB on Emerald Street back in the ’80s. Hoping to some day get back to living at the coast, but actually love East County life. You know Southern Californians, it’s very cold to us when it hits 60 degrees and a slight sprinkle is headline news!!
