The auctions for items purchased during the twelfth week of the 2008 Garage Sale Challenge ended Sunday evening with 16 of the original 32 items listed selling for a total of $384.93 and a sell-through rate of only 50%. Two of the 32 items didn’t surive the week.
I ended the auction for the LeBlanc Noblet Paris wood clarinet when, in response to a question from an interested buyer, I found it did have a small crack in the wood. The description has been changed to reflect that crack and it has been re-listed this week. eBay ended the auction for the SPSS 13.0 Windows Student Version software, saying I was in violation of it’s VeRO policy.
Three additional items were sold Sunday evening. The other two Zippo Vargas lighters were sold via second change offers for $38.88 and $36.00. In addition, after the auctions closed, I received an offer of $35.00 for the Pen Sketches Of Nebraskans book that I accepted. These sales bring the eBay total for the week up to $495.80.
This weeks auctions were led by the 1998 limited edition Remington Wildlife pocket knife that sold for $101.11. Amazon sales accounted for an additional $469.26 in revenue this week from the sale of fifteen books. Amazon sales were led by three algebra textbooks that sold for $60+ each.
Here’s how things look to date:

Notice the final value fee figure of $110.35. $77.35 of this is commissions paid to Amazon. All the people talking about how much better Amazon is in relationship to eBay aren’t taking into account the huge commissions Amazon charges.

Just wondering - when you purchase books on Amazon, does your cost reflect the shipping expenses? When I compute profits, I include all my expenses in the cost, whether it be shipping, cleaning, repairs, etc. I am assuming you do pay shipping on the books you buy from Amazon - if not, please let us know your secret!
Thanks for all your valuable insight!

grits,
I’ve never purchased a book from Amazon for resale.
The books I’m talking about in the Challenge related to Amazon aren’t books I’ve purchased on Amazon. They are books I bought at garage sales, thrift shops, book sales, or auctions sales and listed/sold on Amazon.
That said, since the Garage Sale Challenge is about net profit, all costs of acquisition are subtracted from the sales price.
The figure shown under “Amazon Sales” each week is the actual gross sales price of the books I’ve sold on Amazon that week. The initial cost of the book is included in the “Cost” column; the commission Amazon collects is included in the “FV Fees” column; the “Miles” column includes the miles I put on my vehicle to acquire them figured at the IRS rate at the beginning of 2008 of $.505 per mile; and any other costs incurred in selling them such as repairs, etc. would be included in the “Incid. Fees” column.
Hope this answers your question.

Hi Gary,
I’m interested in the difference between eBay fees and Amazon fees. When I add listing fees and PayPal fees to the eBay Final Value fees, it seems eBay gets 12.5% of the total. Amazon comes out at 16.5% of the total Amazon sales. Counting in listing fees for unsold items in the future, the gap gets even smaller.
While I don’t think Amazon is a complete alternative to eBay, Amazon’s lower customer service demands (buyer hand holding) and no fees to relist, make the differences between the two almost a wash.

duh - it makes perfect sense now - I just read it incorrectly and thought YOU were purchasing books that were listed on Amazon - not that you were purchasing books that you then listed on Amazon. Thanks for the clarification ~ another of my “blond” moments
