Calvin and Hobbes was comic strip written and illustrated by Bill Watterson. It was syndicated daily from November 18, 1985 to December 31st, 1995 and, at it’s height of popularity, was carried by more than 2400 newspapers worldwide.
Due to the popularity of the strip, it was only natural that collections of the strips be published in book form. To date, more than 30 million copies of the Calvin & Hobbes books have been printed making them readily available at garage sales, thrift shops, book sales, and other venues.
When found, they can often be purchased for $.50 or less and I wouldn’t recommend paying much more than that per book.
Complete sets will usually bring anywhere from $3.00 to $5.50 per book. Smaller lots consisting of anywhere from four or five up to thirteen or fourteen books will regularly bring between $2.50 to $4.00 per book.
To the best of my knowledge there have been seventeen titles published. Here are the titles:
- Calvin and Hobbes
- The Essential Calvin and Hobbes
- The Authoritative Calvin and Hobbes
- The Indispensable Calvin and Hobbes
- It’s a Magical World
- Homicidal Psycho Jungle Cat
- There’s Treasure Everywhere
- Sunday Pages 1985-1995
- The Calvin and Hobbes Tenth Anniversary Book
- The Days are Just Packed
- Something Under the Bed is Drooling
- Attack of the Deranged Mutant Killer Monster Snow Goons
- The Revenge of the Baby-sat
- Scientific Progress Goes “Boink”
- Yukon Ho!
- Weirdos From Another Planet
- The Calvin and Hobbes Lazy Sunday Book
There was an eighteenth Calvin and Hobbes book by Linda Holmen and Mary Santella-Johnson published in 1993. The book is titled “Teaching With Calvin And Hobbes” and it used Calvin And Hobbes comic strips in conjunction with original text by the authors to teach special needs students.
It was published under special license by a children’s book publisher in Fargo, North Dakota in a limited press run of 2500 copies that were only sold to teachers and educational specialists. These are extremely rare and the last two to sell on eBay sold for $1050.00 and $331.13.
There is also a boxed three volumes set titled “The Complete Calvin And Hobbes” worth watching for. This normally sells by itself for anywhere from $50 to $100 or a little more depending on condition and who’s looking.

Thanks so much for this post! Calvin & Hobbes was one of my absolute favorites, and I am working on building a complete collection myself - but I’m determined to thrift them all, so it could take a while! I’m copying your list to keep in my purse - super handy, thanks again!

I’m still searching for the “Teaching With Calvin And Hobbes”. If I’m not mistaken the authors both taught in North Dakota and you would think there would be a couple copies floating around the state somewhere. So far no luck though.
