Boldly Go Where No Man Has Gone Before

Posted on 16 May 2006 by Gary H

If you were ever a Star Trek fan then I’m sure you’re familiar with the phrase “boldly going where no man has gone before” which was used in all the lead-ins to the original Star Trek series.

According to Wikipedia the phrase came into being when:

“The Star Trek character Zefram Cochrane supposedly originated the phrase in a speech which described what humans could do with this new warp technology.”

I’m guessing when Mr. Cochrane first used that phrase he was talking to a group of Star Fleet commanders, but it’s also great advice for people who shop at garage sales for eBay inventory because if you are willing to boldly go where no man has gone before I promise you, you’re going to buy a lot more good inventory and make a lot more money.

There are several ways you can apply the phrase boldly go where no man has gone before to your garage sale shopping.

Early Buyer’s Privileges At Garage Sales

Posted on 15 May 2006 by Gary H

There’s a new twist appearing at several garage/estate sales in this area of the Midwest this year - early buyer’s privileges at garage sales and estate sales.

Several large church groups, non-profit organizations, and school groups have begun offering early buyer’s privileges at garage sales and opening one to two hours early for buyers who are willing to pay anywhere from $1 to $3 for the chance to shop before regular shoppers are allowed in.

Additionally, early buyer’s privileges have been offered for anywhere from $5 to $25 by a few local estate sales already this year.

Early buyer’s privileges have been common place with many large antique shows and flea markets around the country for many years. Long before eBay came into existence , I regularly paid anywhere from $25 to $200, or more, for the privilege of shopping at antique shows and flea markets before the regular buying public was allowed in the doors.

eBay Prices At Garage Sales

Posted on 04 May 2006 by Gary H

There have been several comments on eBay forums & news groups recently about the increase in finding eBay prices at garage sales.

The consensus seems to be that a lot of people are realizing that their garage sales are being “picked” by people who then turn around and sell what they bought at a profit. Actually, this isn’t anything new; it’s been going on for years. But, the huge popularity of eBay has added two new twists to the mix.

  • The number of people buying things for resale has increased dramatically
  • It’s now very easy for someone having a garage or estate sale to check values of what they are selling

There isn’t any doubt that the ease with which someone can now check the “collector value” of something on eBay, has lead to increasing eBay prices at garage sales making it more difficult to buy quality inventory at price that still allow a profit to be made.

I went to one such sale earlier this morning that was a good example of eBay prices at garage sales.

Posted on 03 May 2006 by Gary H

A look back at Paperpleasures46’s top ten eBay sellers for April provides a couple of insights.

First, I’d spent a lot of time in March running around to hockey tournaments, so I needed to get back into the eBay frame of mind and it’s taken a while go get moving again. I tell Arlene I’ve just been enjoying an extended mini-vacation. She tells me it’s because I’m staring my 60th birthday in the face in a couple months and I’m beginning to think I’m getting old.

Whichever it is, I thought we’d look at the top ten eBay sellers for April for Paperpleasures46 and maybe learn something from them.

May Issue Of Magazine Gold Newsletter

Posted on 01 May 2006 by Gary H

The May issue of Magazine Gold Premium Newsletter which was scheduled to be mailed to subscribers today, will be one or two days late in reaching subscribers mail box.

The computer I’d been using to put the newsletter together suffered an agonizing death earlier today, and it will take one or two days to get all the pieces together on a different computer.

I apologize for the delay.

Want Some Really Bad eBay Advice?

Posted on 01 May 2006 by Gary H

Want some really bad eBay advice that will literally cost you thousands of dollars a year in profits? It’s right at your fingertips. All you need to do is look.

Open Google in your browser and type in the phrase “how to stop ebay auction sniping”. Here’s what you get. Hundreds of eBay related web sites with basically the same article on them.

When I stumbled across this article a few days ago, the first question that popped into my mind was “why would I want to stop bidders from sniping my auctions?” I couldn’t think of even one viable reason. Snipers put more money into my pocket and I’ll be honest - I like having money in my pocket.
