Time For A Hockey Vacation

The Auction Rebel will be pretty much silent for the next few days. I’m leaving early tomorrow morning for Denver for the NCAA Western Regional hockey tournament. Hopefully both Minnesota and North Dakota will win on Saturday. Then we could get another shot at them after they beat us 3-2 in overtime for the WCHA Championship last Saturday.

eBay Tip - eBay 20¢ Listing Day Strategy

Posted on 14 March 2007 by Gary H

As you are probably aware, eBay is holding a 20¢ listing promotion today. Hundreds of thousands of sellers are sitting at their computer, for most of the day, madly writing auctions ads in an attempt to save 10¢ or 15¢ on as many listings as possible.

If you regularly take advantage of eBay’s listing promotions here’s an idea that may allow you to spend less time listing and save more money than the listing herd.

Rather than listing as many low cost items as you can, concentrate on listing items that you will want to set higher starting bids on. You will spend less time writing descriptions and can save significantly more on the listing fees.

It doesn’t take much longer to list an item with a $99.99 starting bid than one with a $2.99 starting bid and rather than saving 15¢ in listing fees, you will save $2.20. Listing an item with a starting bid of $500 or more would result in a savings of $4.60 rather than 15¢.

The $1000 A Month Thrift Store eBay Challenge - March - Week 2

Posted on 13 March 2007 by Gary H

$1000 a month thrift store ebay challenge

Sunday evening the auctions for the second week of the March $1000 A Month Thrift Store eBay Challenge ended. There were nineteen thrift store items listed. Fourteen sold, but not the ones it looks like from looking at my closed sales.

While the Bakelite poker chip caddy sold, the winning bidder and I mutually canceled the sale because while responding to a question from someone about what diameter chips it would hold, I discovered two small hairline cracks in it. Since there were less than 12 hours left in the auction, I couldn’t cancel the bids and end the auction, so it ran it’s course but what it sold for isn’t included in this weeks sales. The original listing fees are still included in our figures though.

Half an hour after the auctions ended, I received an email from someone interested in one of the unsold items - the Lighting His Fire audio book - and it was sold privately for the opening bid of $9.99. That sale is included in this weeks totals.

So, when all was said and done, here’s how the figures for March look after the first two weeks.

Ended Sold Cost List Fees FV Fees PayPal Fees Incid. Fees Miles Net Profit
Mar. 4 $50.06 $10.00 $10.60 $2.62 $3.30 $0.00 $4.00 $19.52
Mar 11 $301.39 $86.50 $15.80 $15.53 $14.19 $0.00 $8.00 $161.37
Mar 18 $20.55 $21.30 $12.00

eBay Stores – 30-Day Free Trial Offer

Posted on 12 March 2007 by Gary H

If anyone has been thinking about opening an eBay store, now may be a good time to do it.

Between now and March 18th, eBay is currently offering a 30-day free trial offer for first-time eBay store subscribers. The offer applies to both Basic and Featured stores.

While I’m not convinced that 30 days is a long enough period of time to be able to make a decision as to whether an eBay store will work for you, if you’ve been thinking about opening one, now might be a good time.

Hunting For Peter Capstick Books

Posted on 12 March 2007 by Gary H

peter capstick

Peter Hathaway Capstick (1940-1996) left the white collar world of Wall Street early in his life for the world of hunting and fishing which he loved. After a short period of time in South America, he landed in Africa where he spent most of his life hunting big game and guiding other hunters. In the latter years of his life he wrote several books about Africa and big game hunting.

He had a writing style that attracted readers, and he quickly developed a loyal following. Today, his books are just as popular, if not more so, with outdoorsmen and others interested in Africa and big game hunting. While I’m not aware of any huge winners among his books, like Gene Hill, all of them will sell on eBay or Amazon and are worth picking up when you find them for a dollar or so. What also make them attractive is that they aren’t rare, and you will find them at garage sales, book sales, and estate sales.

Probably none of his titles will reach three figures, the first edition of a few of them will come close, and any of them will sell in the $15 to $35 range if in nice condition and properly described.

Here’s a list of Peter Capstick’s titles I’m aware of:
